Principles of Trusting God, #03 Fellowship with God

The Bible is full of people that had fellowship with God. Our English word FELLOWSHIP comes from the Greek word in the Bible “koinonia” meaning to be in partnership or sharing common things together or having communion with each other. So, these biblical characters had a partnership with God, or they shared common things together with God.

Fellowship speaks of being like-minded; sharing common interests or attributes; living in harmony, unity, peace, love, and agreement. Fellowship again speaks of trusting each other. A journey can only be made safely by people who can trust each other or who have fellowship with one another. Fellowship is more of a relationship with each other.

People who can trust in God demonstrate that they have a deeper personal relationship with God. They actually live in fellowship with God. In Genesis 5:24 the bible says, “Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him”. In Amos 3:3 the bible says, “Do two walk together unless they have agreed to meet”? “Enoch walked with God” simply means that Enoch had fellowship with God. The fellowship was so deep that God decided to take him away from the earth so that he can be with Him forever. It pays to trust in God because trust creates a strong bond or relationship with God.

So, from the story of Enoch, we can learn that it is quite possible that we can have fellowship with God. Such a fellowship can cause God to think of translating us into His glory. The story of Jesus Christ coming back again is a story of Him coming to take away those who have developed a strong bond or fellowship with Him. Those who share the same interests and attributes with Jesus Christ are the ones qualified for either the resurrection of the saints or the rapture of the saints. Therefore, trusting God and trusting the Lord Jesus Christ pays off for we will be candidates to be taken into His glory.

Noah was a righteous man before God. It means he had fellowship with God. One of God’s attributes is that He is righteous and holy. Noah shared that attribute with God and God decided not to destroy Noah and his family with the rest of the world with a flood because He found Noah righteous before Him. In Genesis 6:9 it says, “Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God”. In Genesis 6:8 it says, “But Noah found favour in the eyes of the LORD”. He found FAVOUR because he was in fellowship with God.

Another good example is Abraham. In Genesis 17:1-2 it says, “When Abram was ninety-nine years old the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless, that I may make my covenant between me and you and may multiply you greatly.” Abram had a calling to walk with God or to have fellowship with God so that God can make a covenant with him. Fellowship speaks of trusting one another. In Genesis 22 we see Abraham trusting God to the extent of killing his dear son Isaac in the hope that the same God would raise him back from the dead since he was the child with a promise. God had to provide for Himself with a lamb of sacrifice instead of Isaac because He reckoned that Abraham was a true friend indeed who trusted Him. Trust is a principle of responding to God. The early church had fellowship with God through Jesus Christ our Lord, and they witnessed many signs and wonders as they preached the gospel. Peter was delivered from prison in Acts 12 through the prayers of the church which had fellowship with God. The shadow of Peter healed the sick and performed wonders because he had fellowship with God through Jesus Christ. Brethren, you will never regret if you establish a strong fellowship with God through Jesus Christ.

It is the blood of Jesus Christ that cleanses us from all evil and guilty and forgives us of our sins. Through Christ, we have access to God, and we can call God our Father. Father is a term that denotes a strong fellowship with God. God can relate to us just as a father can relate to his children. We are God’s children through Christ who cleansed us from our sins so that we may become the righteousness of God. You and I have a calling to have a fellowship with God. Amen.
